PORTLAND, Ore. (Saturday, July 18, 2026) – On a hot and sunny afternoon in Centennial, Colorado, the Portland Thorns fell 2-1 to Denver Summit FC in the inaugural match at Centennial Stadium.
Denver led the charge offensively to begin the match, but the Portland defense fought back hard to limit those opportunities. Then in the 25th minute, it would be Portland who opened the scoring when forward Sophia Wilson converted a penalty kick to tally her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
However, just before the end of the first half, Denver managed to find their first when forward Janine Sonis’ cross into the box flew into the Portland goal.
In the second half, Denver continued to push Portland back defensively and the Thorns continued to deny them chance after chance. Unfortunately for Portland, the Summit would find their game-winner in the 86th minute when defender Natalie Means received the ball on the outside left flank of Portland’s box and sent the ball into the far-right corner.
