Portland Thorns striker Sophia Smith has been nominated by Concacaf for the 2023/24 Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year award. Concacaf has also opened the fan voting for the Confederation’s awards program.

The 2023/24 season nominees have been selected based on performance statistics and the input of football experts. To be eligible to be shortlisted for these exciting Concacaf awards, all players must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Have played for a Concacaf Member Association's senior Men's or Women's national team (in eligible Concacaf and FIFA competitions and matches).
• Regardless of nationality, played for a club (in the 2023/24 season) in a Concacaf and FIFA-sanctioned top division Men’s or Women’s professional league in the Concacaf region.
• Following the nomination process, Concacaf will continue its football first philosophy with a voting process that ensures players, coaches, media, and fans determine the winners.
• Have played for a Concacaf Member Association's senior Men's or Women's national team (in eligible Concacaf and FIFA competitions and matches).
• Regardless of nationality, played for a club (in the 2023/24 season) in a Concacaf and FIFA-sanctioned top division Men’s or Women’s professional league in the Concacaf region.
• Following the nomination process, Concacaf will continue its football first philosophy with a voting process that ensures players, coaches, media, and fans determine the winners.

The voting process for the  Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year award (100 votes total)

 will work as follows:

• 41 votes: one vote for each Concacaf Member Association’s Women's National Team Head Coach
• 41 votes: one vote for each Concacaf Member Association’s Women's Captain
• 9 votes: one vote each for nine representative members of the media from the Concacaf region
• 9 votes: fan voting through www.concacaf.com/awards.
• The player with the most fan votes will receive 4 votes in the overall voting process, second place 3 votes, and third place 2 votes (regardless of how many people vote online)

At the conclusion of the voting period, on August 2, 2024, the player with the most votes out of the 100 available will be named 2023/24 Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year.

PORTLAND, Ore. (Saturday, August 15, 2026) – The Portland Thorns continued their impressive home form with a 2-1 win over Orlando Pride on Saturday when forward Caiya Hanks — who was making her return to the pitch after missing action for over a year with an ACL injury — scored a stoppage time winner to secure three points for the home side.

Both sides battled back and forth as they tried to search for the opening goal, with Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold making three saves to ensure the match remained level going into the halftime break.

The Thorns came out into the second half much more threatening in Orlando’s half and finally broke the deadlock in the 58^th minute when forward Pietra Tordin laid the ball off to forward Deyna Castellanos, who from the top right corner of Orlando’s box placed the ball perfectly into the top left corner of the goal over the hands of Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse.

The lead was short lived however when Arnold’s diving save to punch out a crossed ball in the 63^rd minute ricocheted off the knees of Orlando forward Jacqueline Ovalle and rolled into the net to level things back up.

From there, Portland and Orlando continued in their fight to search for a second and despite several good looks at goal, the match remained level.

That would all change after Hanks — who subbed on in the 88^th minute — curled the ball into the goal from outside the box in the 96^th to send Providence Park into a frenzy as the Thorns secured three points and extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 matches, nine on the season.
